Intent

At Bishop’s Hull Primary School, Personal, Social, Health, Citizenship and Economic (PSHCE) education is an integral part of our rich and balanced curriculum. It brings together citizenship, wellbeing and relatioships alongside living in our world while weaving in the core principles of British values. Through engaging lessons following the Kapow Scheme, we aim to empower pupils to understand themselves and others, make informed choices and embrace challenges with confidence. We celebrate success in all its forms and encourage collaboration, independence, and respect for diversity. 

Our aim is to nurture self-esteem, encourage resilience, and be respectful of others’ beliefs and opinions. We celebrate achievements in all their forms and promote teamwork, collaboration, and independence. By promoting British values, we help children grow into healthy, responsible, and independent individuals who respect diversity, value themselves and others, and feel prepared for life as active citizens who can make a positive difference in society. 

Implementation

PSHCE is woven throughout the school day and taught through assemblies and weekly lessons, with each year group covering My Healthy Self, Connecting with Others, The Online World and Citizenship and then a range of the other units are covered across the years.

We also highlight key national campaigns and global events such as Remembrance Day, Children’s Mental Health Week, Road Safety, and Children in Need. In alternate years, we dedicate time to whole-school topics like water and beach safety as well as sun safety. 

Inclusion is at the heart of our approach. Children are encouraged (and supported where necessary) to interact positively, apply the skills they are learning, and make connections across subjects such as History, Geography, PE, Science, and RE. In Early Years, PSHCE links closely with ‘Understanding the World’, helping children make sense of their physical environment and their community. 

From EYFS to Year 6 we cover the following areas:

• My Healthy Self

• Connecting with Others

• The Online World

•  Citizenship

• Staying Safe

• Growing Up

• Health Protection

• Sex Education (Year 6 only)

The children meet these themes throughout the course of the year with themes being built upon as the children move through school.  

Throughout the school, we follow the Kapow Scheme of work with weekly lessons that build on previous learning and help the children to think about themselves and the wider world. From Year 1- 6 the pupils all have books that they can do their work in to reflect on what they have learnt in a lesson or series of lessons.

At Bishop’s Hull Primary School, we aim to equip every child with the skills and values they need to thrive in life. Our pupils will: 

• Develop strong interpersonal skills that help them build positive, respectful relationships. 

• Grow in confidence to tackle real-life challenges and apply their learning in the modern world. 

• Engage with current and relevant social issues, becoming tolerant, well-rounded global citizens. 

• Show the qualities and attributes that reflect British Values, preparing them for life in a diverse society. 

• Respect different lifestyles and choices, understanding and appreciating the importance of inclusion and empathy. 

• Recognise the importance of leading a healthy lifestyle, including understanding relationships, physical wellbeing, and drug education. 

• Use technology safely and responsibly, while understanding personal safety in all areas of life. 

• Begin planning for their future, exploring careers and financial education before moving on to secondary school. 

We believe these experiences empower our children to become confident, responsible individuals who are ready to make a positive impact in the world.
