British Values & Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural Development and

We are committed to developing confident, caring and responsible citizens who are well prepared for life in modern Britain. Through our curriculum, values and daily school life, we actively promote British Values and support every child’s Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural (SMSC) development. We foster an inclusive environment where children learn to respect themselves and others, celebrate diversity, understand their rights and responsibilities, and develop the confidence to make positive contributions to their community. By nurturing curiosity, empathy, resilience and respect, we help our pupils grow not only as successful learners, but also as thoughtful and active members of society.

Spiritual development relates to the beliefs, feelings and emotions through which children acquire worthwhile insights into their own lives. All areas of the curriculum contribute to spiritual development. Although education and spiritual development are not synonymous, school experiences make a significant contribution to spiritual development. 

Moral development refers to the children’s knowledge, understanding, intentions, attitudes and behaviour in relation to what is right and wrong. Bishop’s Hull has a well-established Positive Behaviour policy and staff promote a supportive approach to the management of challenging behaviour. 

Social development relates to the skills and personal qualities necessary for individuals to function effectively in society.

Cultural development  refers to pupils increasing understanding and response to those elements, which give societies and groups their unique character. We promote the cultural traditions of our own area and the ethnic and cultural diversity of the world. 

We encourage our pupils to explore their own beliefs and values while showing understanding and respect for the views, faiths and backgrounds of others. Through meaningful discussion, reflection and shared experiences, children learn to appreciate diversity, celebrate differences and recognise the importance of treating everyone with dignity and kindness.

Our pupils are supported to understand right and wrong, make responsible choices and contribute positively to their school and wider community. They learn the importance of democracy, individual liberty, mutual respect, tolerance of others and the rule of law through age-appropriate experiences that enable them to put these values into practice. Whether voting for school representatives, taking on positions of responsibility, participating in community projects or learning about the wider world, pupils are given opportunities to develop their voice and understand the impact they can have on others.

Through this work, we aim to nurture compassionate, thoughtful and resilient young people who are ready to play an active role in modern Britain and make a positive difference in the world around them.

Democracy -

 

Pupil voice is an extremely important part of school life and at the heart of our school; ensuring that pupils have a say in what happens at our school. Elections for Pupil Leadership opportunities such as School Forum, E-Cadets and House Captains provide a platform for every child to have a voice.

Tolerance of different faiths and beliefs -

 

We celebrate the diversity of our local, national and global communities. Through our curriculum, assemblies, themed events and learning about different cultures, religions and beliefs, children develop an understanding of and appreciation for the world around them. We encourage pupils to ask questions, challenge stereotypes and show tolerance, empathy and acceptance towards people whose experiences and beliefs may differ from their own.

Individual Liberty-

 

We support pupils to become confident, independent learners who can make informed choices and take responsibility for their actions. Children are encouraged to express themselves, develop their interests and challenge themselves in a safe and supportive environment. Through our curriculum, enrichment opportunities and safeguarding education, pupils learn about their rights, personal freedoms and how to stay safe both online and offline.

Mutual Respect -

 

Respect is at the heart of our school community. We teach children to value themselves and others, recognising that everyone deserves kindness, courtesy and consideration. Through positive relationships, collaborative learning and our school values, pupils learn to celebrate each other's achievements, listen to different perspectives and treat others with respect, regardless of differences.

Rule of Law -

We teach children the importance of rules and laws in keeping everyone safe, happy and able to learn. Through our behaviour expectations, classroom charters and everyday interactions, pupils learn about responsibility, fairness and the consequences of their actions. Visits from community professionals, such as police officers and other local services, help children understand the role laws play in wider society and why they are important.
