Intent
At Bishops Hull Primary School, we foster a love of mathematics and a deep appreciation for the patterns and structures within the subject. Our intent is to provide every child with a broad and balanced maths curriculum that enables them to confidently explore, reason, and solve problems, building a secure understanding of mathematical thinking.
Teachers create a positive attitude towards maths learning in their classrooms and reinforce the belief that all children are capable of achieving high standards.
Implementation
We take a whole-school approach to the teaching and learning of mathematics, ensuring consistency, progression, and depth across all year groups.
In the Foundation Stage, maths is taught through the EYFS framework, with a focus on developing early number sense, spatial awareness, and mathematical language. We use the Mastering Number programme to provide daily structured sessions that encourage children to explore numbers, patterns, and relationships through hands-on activities, play, and discussion. Children are supported to problem-solve, reason, and talk about their mathematical thinking in meaningful contexts.
In Key Stage 1 and 2, maths is taught daily using clear and comprehensive approach aligned with the NCETM Curriculum Prioritisation. Lessons are carefully sequenced to build on prior knowledge and ensure progression in fluency, reasoning, and problem-solving. Teachers use precise questioning and formative assessment strategies to identify misconceptions and adapt teaching to meet the needs of all learners.
We embed the Ashley Down Multiplication approach to support pupils in developing a deep and flexible understanding of multiplication and division. Conceptual understanding is strengthened through visual representations, repeated practise and opportunities to apply knowledge in varied contexts.
Where appropriate, cross-curricular links are made to reinforce mathematical understanding, and real-life contexts are used to make learning meaningful. Themed days and enrichment opportunities are used to enhance engagement and deepen pupils’ mathematical thinking.
