 Intent

Our D&T curriculum aims to ensure pupils become curious, creative and innovative thinkers, with a broad understanding of how products are designed and made. Using the Kapow scheme across all year groups we provide a rich, progressive and inclusive curriculum which allows pupils to develop the confidence to identify problems, generate ideas, plan and create products and evaluate their outcomes. Alongside practical skills, pupils develop an awareness of how design and technology shape the way they live, work and interact with the world around them.

Implementation:

D&T lessons are aligned with the National Curriculum. Units are taught termly, alternating with art, and are linked to other curriculum areas where possible. Units cover six key areas: Mechanisms, Structures, Cooking and Nutrition, Textiles, Electronical Systems and The Digital World. Each unit of work is structured around four strands: Design, Make, Evaluate, Technical Knowledge.

Work is evidenced in design and evaluation sheets and in display areas in the classrooms and walkways. There are opportunities for pupils to showcase their products with other members of the school community through assemblies, classroom visits, parent workshops and class webpages.

It is important that pupils begin to ‘think like designers and engineers’ by considering how designers identify problems, generate ideas, and create solutions to meet real-world needs. Accordingly, Kapow’s D&T scheme uses the design cycle to support planning and making. This encourages pupils to ask design questions and learn how designers and engineers develop and refine their ideas through research, testing and evaluation.

The skills learned in D&T also help with learning across the curriculum, for example knowledge about the properties of materials helps in science and the practice of measuring accurately is applied in maths. These cross-curricular links are made explicit during lessons to develop pupils’ understanding of how to apply skills and knowledge to different areas of the curriculum.

Impact:

Our D&T curriculum will ensure that pupils have the ability to:

  • Demonstrate critical thinking skills.

  • Analyse and assess existing designs in terms of effectiveness.

  • Consider ways of redesigning and reconstructing products to improve their overall success.

  • Demonstrate a passion for designing and making products, including the preparation of food products.

  • Demonstrate the ability to design, make, evaluate and improve their own work.

  • Have a good understanding of the key vocabulary relating to design and technology.

  • Be able to transfer their skills and vocabulary knowledge into key stage 3.
